Reading a BOM after a line relocation
A practical checklist for plant finance when production cells move but bills of materials still describe the old layout.
Line moves are celebrated with ribbon cuttings. BOMs and routings are updated later — sometimes much later. Until then, manufacturing cost controls quietly compare actual tickets to a ghost of the previous layout.
What to pull on day one
- Current routing for the relocated SKUs
- The BOM revision dates versus the physical move date
- Labour tickets for two weeks before and after the move
- Any temporary work instructions that never entered the masters
Labour hours first
After a move, walking distances and setup patterns change. If absorbed labour still follows the old routing, efficiency variances will shout even when operators are doing the new job correctly. Sample a few orders end-to-end before you rewrite standards wholesale.
Material issue points
Stores locations change more often than BOM component lists. Confirm issue points and backflush triggers still match where material is actually staged. A correct BOM quantity with the wrong issue warehouse still breaks cost application analytics.
